What’s your one thing worth fighting for?
Over half-term, we took our youngest to explore the hidden war tunnels beneath Clapham Common, stretching out under the Northern Line.
Turns out, the entrance was just 50m from the first house I rented in London, right under the Clapham South Majestic Wine Warehouse and Pitcher and Piano (hazy memories), there’s a space built for 8,000 people, complete with canteen, medical centre and a compressed-air sewage system designed to shoot your business up...🤞🏻
Initially built for the Blitz, the tunnels ended up sheltering families whose homes were destroyed, some for years. Large parts were dug by hand as the tunnels were too big for the machinery for tube lines.
The theme connects with the conversation I had this week with Auden Schendler about his new book, Terrible Beauty: Reckoning with Climate Complicity and Rediscovering Our Soul.
At first, I wasn’t sure how relevant it was to “work” in the usual sense. But as employee activism on climate action is something I am hearing more and more about, it is starting to feel very relevant indeed. Auden’s writing is elegant and raw, a dream of saving his kids from the World Trade Centre stopped my heart.
So, my question this week is what’s the one thing you will, or already do, fight for?
Christine
P.S. Full Auden interview drops in my newsletter next week.
