“What we need is a good recession”

This week I’m exploring some of the rage about changes to how we work, my response to default answer and sharing more data on women’s feelings about the office. It’s not what you think.

Women vs the office

Last week, I also promised you a deep dive on the Randstad data that we shared. We looked at the data which showed that of 12,000 surveyed, women are unhappier in offices than every other group of men regardless of where they work.

Many of you came back very logically saying ‘But it’s not the office as such, it’s the extra caring for kids and parents they do and they want to save the commute time’.

Only the data doesn’t show this.

Gender and Responsibility Average Hapiness / 10 Average Fullfilment / 10
Male Caring Responsibilities 6.90 6.66
Male No Caring Responsibilities 6.58 6.28
Female No Caring Responsibilities 6.43 6.18
Female Caring Responsibilities 6.36 6.29

Women at the office are less happy than men whether or not they have caring responsibilities.

Fascinatingly, both women and men with caring responsibilities say they are generally more fulfilled by work than those without (though men notably more so).

And I thought it was only me who went to work to escape my kids!

Let me know your thoughts.

Next week is half-term, if you're on LinkedIn we‘ll have a treat for you over there, otherwise see you the week after.

Christine
