My career failures (so you can avoid them)
This week I was asked to speak at the Specsavers careers week. Instead of talking about work trends they asked me to share what I’ve learnt about staying ahead of the curve
What we needed to know earlier
We have a treat for you this week! We're featuring the amazing Joeli Brearley, the powerhouse behind Pregnant Then Screwed.
Productivity advice misses the point
Our friend, Chris Mitchell, rowed across the Atlantic Ocean this year. He and teammate, Robbie Laidlaw, raised over £250,000 for charity — an incredible achievement. Chris and Robbie have been given awards, written about, and invited onto stages, podcasts, and panels to talk about their epic row and the three years of work that led to it.
Can I have your advice? 🧠
Inspired by my chat with Isabel Berwick of the FT and the Working It podcast and newsletter yesterday (see the post and do comment) I am asking you to share the best work advice you know.
Disengagement: new data sparks urgent call for action (and new ideas)
Gallup’s Global Employee Engagement data released this week says that 77% of employees are disengaged. That is 3 out of 4 people! Most of them are ‘filling a seat and watching the clock’. But 18% are actively disruptive.
The data is new but the trend isn’t.
The most shameful decision of my career
There have been a few (!) but the one I‘m referring to feels as raw and nauseating today as when it happened.
The most powerful leadership advice I was ever given
15 years ago the ad agency I was working at, BBDO, flew a bunch of us to LA to talk strategy for three days in a cavernous hotel. My main memory is of escaping a formal dinner for a bar crawl in stretch limos.
